Why Do Cats Eat Grass?

It isn’t uncommon to see your feline friend in the yard nibbling on fresh grass. Good news is there really isn’t anything to worry about. Some experts even suggest that it can actually be beneficial for your cat.

Do they want to vomit?

Cats are meat eaters, so when they eat grass they lack the required enzymes to break down vegetable matter and as a result vomit. They do not want to vomit but the act can help indigestible matter be removed from their digestive tract, making them feel better.

Is grass healthy for them?

Your cat is essentially enjoying a healthy green smoothie! Grass contains folic acid, an essential vitamin for a cat’s bodily functions. Assisting in the production of haemoglobin, a protein that moves oxygen in the blood. Who knew your cat was such a health junkie?

What goes in must come out..

A little bit of grass goes a long way when cleaning out their system. Often fur balls struggle to move down the digestive tract, but grass help them get to the other end.

For both indoor and outdoor cats, always make sure that all your household plants are non-toxic as cats often nibble. You could start your own kitty herb/grass patch for them. This would give them an alternative to outdoor grass which may have pesticides, herbicides or other chemicals used on them.
